College Advising Services

Every student approaches the college search with different interests, goals, and questions. My advising is designed to help students think thoughtfully about their academic direction, explore colleges where they will thrive, and navigate the admissions process with confidence.

Services can be tailored to each student’s needs, but typically begin with a discovery session.

Graduate school admissions advising is also available. However, due to university policies, Sara is not able to provide services to current Montana State Students or alumni.

Advising Packages and Services

Student Discovery Session
$225.00

The best place to start!

Most students and families begin with a Student Discovery Session and after receiving the report, determine which package is best suited for their needs.

The goal of the discovery session is to better understand each student’s interests, strengths, values, and goals—and to begin shaping a personalized path forward.

Prior to the session, students will complete a set of guided inventories to reflect on their academic interests, experiences, and preferences. These help ensure our time together is focused and meaningful.

During the session, we’ll have a deep, one-on-one conversation to explore key themes, identify potential directions, and begin outlining a thoughtful approach to the college search and application process.

Following the session, families will receive a written report summarizing key insights and recommended next steps.

Student Discovery Session

The discovery session is a 90-minute conversation focused on understanding the student as a learner and thinker. Together we explore intellectual interests, strengths, activities, and possible academic directions.

This conversation often helps students gain clarity about what they want from their college experience and how to approach the college search.

Topics we often explore include:

  • academic interests and curiosity

  • learning style and strengths

  • meaningful activities and experiences

  • possible majors or academic directions

  • the types of colleges where the student may thrive

Following the session, families receive a short written summary outlining key insights and suggested next steps.

College Planning and Application Advising

Comprehensive and limited packages tailored to your needs!

For students who would benefit from ongoing support, advising is offered throughout the college search and application process.

Areas of guidance may include:

  • developing a thoughtful college list

  • identifying academic programs aligned with the student’s interests

  • application strategy and timelines

  • personal statement and essay development

  • evaluating admissions and financial aid offers

The goal is to help students approach the process with clarity and confidence, take the burden of deadline and application anxiety off of parents, all while remaining focused on colleges that fit each students’s unique goals and interests.

Academic Pathway Advising

Some students are less focused on the admissions process itself and more interested in exploring their academic direction.

These advising conversations focus on questions such as:

  • What subjects and ideas genuinely interest the student?

  • What kinds of academic environments support their learning?

  • How might academic interests translate into possible majors or careers?

These conversations can be especially valuable for younger students beginning to think about their future educational path.

Graduate School Admissions

In addition to undergraduate college advising, Sara offers individualized support for students pursuing graduate and professional school opportunities. With extensive experience working with graduate school applicants—including law, master’s, and other advanced degree programs—Sara can provide targeted guidance on application strategy, personal statements, school selection, and overall positioning.

Graduate advising is offered on an hourly basis, allowing for flexible, focused support based on your specific needs through the Academic Pathway Advising hourly rate.

Please note that due to university policies, Sara is not able to provide graduate school advising services to current students or alumni of Montana State University. However, she is happy to work with applicants from other institutions and would be glad to schedule a consultation to discuss how she can best support your goals.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Many students benefit from beginning conversations about college during their junior year of high school, when the college search and application process typically begin in earnest.

However, earlier conversations can also be valuable. Students in their sophomore or even freshman years sometimes find it helpful to reflect on their academic interests, explore possible majors, and think about how their activities connect to their developing goals.

  • No advisor can guarantee admission to a particular college or university. Admission decisions depend on many factors and are made by each institution independently.

My role is to help students present their interests, experiences, and goals clearly and authentically while identifying colleges where they are likely to thrive.

  • Students often benefit from advising when they are beginning to ask questions such as:

    • What should I study in college?
    • What kinds of colleges might fit me best?
    • How should I approach the college search and application process?

Advising can help students approach these questions thoughtfully and with greater confidence.

  • Yes. I work with students applying to a wide range of colleges and universities, including highly selective institutions as well as strong public universities and liberal arts colleges.

The goal of advising is not simply to target selective schools, but to help students identify colleges that fit their interests, learning style, and goals.

  • To ensure that advising remains thoughtful and individualized, I work with a limited number of students each year. This allows me to spend meaningful time getting to know each student and supporting them throughout the process.

  • Yes. I work with students to help them develop thoughtful and authentic personal statements and supplemental essays. My role is to help students clarify their ideas, strengthen their writing, and ensure their applications reflect their genuine interests and experiences.

  • My advising approach is shaped by my experience working with students in a university environment. As an instructor and advisor, I spend much of my time helping students think about their academic interests, educational paths, and long-term goals.

Because of that perspective, I tend to approach college advising somewhat differently from traditional admissions consulting. Rather than focusing primarily on admissions strategy, I begin by helping students reflect on their intellectual interests, strengths, and the kinds of questions they are most curious about exploring.

When students have a clearer sense of what excites them academically and what they hope to gain from their education, the college search becomes much more meaningful. It also tends to lead to applications that are more authentic and compelling.

My goal is to help students find colleges where they will thrive intellectually and personally—not simply to maximize admission to a particular list of schools.

I also work with a limited number of students each year so that advising remains thoughtful and individualized.

  • Families typically begin with a brief introductory conversation. This allows us to discuss the student’s goals, answer questions about advising, and determine whether working together would be helpful.ption
